The “German Season” invited well-known German authors of a new literary generation in Germany to Indonesia for a residency.
For four weeks, the German authors Ulla Lenze, Leif Randt, Andreas Stichmann and Antje Ravic Strubel experienced Indonesia’s cultural diversity and – prior to the Frankfurt Book Fair with Indonesia as Guest of Honour – had new encounters.
Leif Randt and Andreas Stichmann traveled through Java and Sulawesi and met authors, journalists, students and artists. In June, they took part in the Makassar International Writers Festival and held lectures at Indonesian universities.
Ulla Lenze and Antje Ravic Strubel were introduced to the Indonesian way of life in a similar way, through sojourns in urban centers like Jakarta and Yogyakarta or on smaller islands like Belitung.
The direct encounters with the Indonesian people and their culture, as well as an examination of self and public images became topics of their literary features. These were published in German daily and weekly newspapers – the F.A.Z., the Frankfurter Rundschau, the taz, the Tagesspiegel and the Welt – as the authors’ final works following their residencies in Indonesia.
